PayoutTruth®

Etsy says it's free to start. Every sale tells the truth.

No monthly fee — just 20¢ to list, 6.5% off the top, 3% + 25¢ to process, and a 15% cut when Etsy's own ads bring the buyer. Enter a real order and see what you keep.

Etsy's 2026 fee stack, in full

Etsy's pitch is "no monthly fee", and it's true — but the per-sale stack adds up fast, and one part of it is charged on money that isn't even revenue.

Fee (US sellers)RateWhen it's charged
Listing fee$0.20Per listing, renewed every 4 months or after each sale
Transaction fee6.5%On item price + shipping charged + gift wrap, every sale
Payment processing3% + $0.25On the order total (including tax), every sale
Offsite Ads15% / 12%Only on ad-attributed sales; 12% rate applies after $10k/yr, at which point it's mandatory. Capped at $100/order

Regulatory operating fee0.25–1.15%Only in some countries (UK, Canada, India…) — not the US

The trap most sellers miss: the 6.5% transaction fee applies to the shipping you charge the buyer too. Charge $10 shipping on a heavy item and Etsy takes 65¢ of it — even though shipping is a pass-through cost, not profit. Sellers who offer "free shipping" and fold it into the item price actually pay the same fee either way; there's no escape, only awareness.

The Offsite Ads cliff: below $10,000/year you can opt out of Offsite Ads entirely (Shop Manager → Settings → Offsite Ads). Above $10,000, enrollment is mandatory forever — Etsy runs Google ads for your listings whether you like it or not, and takes 12% of any sale those ads touch. At 12%, an ad-attributed order's total Etsy take approaches 25%.

When to leave: Etsy's stack beats Shopify Basic only at low volume. Cross roughly 15–20 orders a month and Shopify's $39 subscription plus lower per-order rate wins — before counting the value of owning your customer list. The calculator above shows the exact crossover for your numbers.

Questions sellers actually ask

How much does Etsy take from a $25 sale?

With $6 shipping ($31 order): $0.20 listing + $2.02 transaction + $1.18 processing = $3.40 in fees, you keep $27.60 (effective rate ~11%). If the sale came from an Offsite Ad, add $4.65 — total take jumps to 26%.

Is it free to sell on Etsy?

No monthly subscription, but not free: $0.20 per listing (renewed after every sale), 6.5% + ~3% + $0.25 per order. Budget 10–12% of revenue for Etsy on ordinary sales.

Do I get fees back when I refund a buyer?

Partially. The 6.5% transaction fee and the 3% processing percentage come back proportionally, but the $0.20 listing fee and the fixed $0.25 processing fee are gone forever. Full refunds still cost you $0.45.

When is Shopify cheaper than Etsy?

Around 15–20 orders a month (~$500–600 revenue) at typical prices — Shopify Basic's $39/mo + 2.9% + 30¢ undercuts Etsy's percentage stack past that point. The comparison above computes your exact crossover.
